Launch of the European ANSA/Anti-fake news alliance for news agencies – Lifestyle

(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, SEPTEMBER 7 – A common platform to tell the story of the Europe of the future – this is the mission of the European Newsroom (ENR), which was inaugurated on Tuesday evening in Brussels at the premises of Belga News Agency.

The project, funded by the European Commission, involves the participation of 18 news agencies, including ANSA, AFP and the German dpa, which coordinates the initiative.

“The war launched by Russia against Ukraine, rising energy prices and climate change know no borders,” European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova told the opening. of the event.

“To better grasp the big picture, readers need a cross-border dimension and a constant reference to the fact that European countries are not isolated, they depend on each other”.

Citing various forms of pressure on the media, ranging from physical threats to economic pressure, Ms. Jourova stressed the need for instruments to ensure that no media “turns into a means of propaganda”.

She announced that next week the European Commission will present the Media Freedom Act, a set of regulations to protect media freedom in the EU.

Others present at the inauguration included European Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, Commissioner for Promoting Our European Way of Life; Ambassador Francesco Maria Talò, Permanent Representative of Italy to NATO; Stefano De Alessandri, CEO of ANSA, and Peter Kropsh, CEO of dpa.

“A collaboration between European news agencies to share best practices, improve the quality of information and fight against misinformation: this is what the European Newsroom is all about,” said De Alessandri during the event.

European Commissioner for the Economy Paolo Gentiloni was on the same wavelength and underlined the crucial role of press agencies in “providing objective and precise information”.

“They are key to building a common understanding of the facts and to countering the growing problem of disinformation and outright propaganda,” Gentiloni said.

“As the saying goes, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts” In this context, I am convinced that the European Newsroom will bring EU activities closer to home, improve the quality of public debate and will strengthen our democracies”.

The project aims to promote a spirit of cooperation between journalists from EU countries and candidate countries, to strengthen the European information network and citizens’ access to quality information in order to contain wave of misinformation.

In addition to reporting, journalists from relevant agencies will also participate in trainings on issues such as fake news and fact-checking, for example.

The agencies involved in the initiative are: dpa (Germany), AFP (France), AGERPRES (Romania), ANSA (Italy), APA (Austria), ATA (Albania), Belga (Belgium), BTA (Bulgaria), EFE (Spain), Europa Press (Spain), FENA (Bosnia and Herzegovina), HINA (Croatia), MIA (North Macedonia), STA (Slovenia), Tanjug (Serbia) and TASR (Slovakia).

In addition, Pap (Poland) and Ukrinform (Ukraine) have the status of partner press agency.
