Olympic host cities spend a lot of money on infrastructure, stadiums, athlete accommodation and event routes which in some cases sit unused years after medals have been awarded and cheering spectators have moved on to the next Olympic Games .

The 15 photos below show moments frozen in time at abandoned Olympic venues months and years after they were used.

The cost of hosting games has been estimated at around €9 billion, with the majority of sports venues being built specifically for games. (Photo by Milos Bicanski/Getty Images)

A drawing of Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin can be seen on the wall of the main amphitheater at the abandoned Hindenburghaus facility where cultural functions and performances were held at the site of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Village on May 17 2021, in Elstal, Germany. A German property developer called Terraplan is constructing and renovating buildings across much of the former Olympic Village site in what local authorities hope will be the first phase of investors’ commitment to develop the whole site. Built for the Berlin Olympics in 1936, the village later served as an infantry school for the Nazi-era Wehrmacht and a military hospital during World War II. After the war, the Soviet army took it over as a military base and also as a training center for its own Olympic athletes. A number of the original buildings still stand on the site, including accommodation for the athletes, a swimming hall, a gymnasium, other training facilities and a theatre.
