Trump’s DC Hotel hosted officials from 33 countries after winning 2016 election

FPresident Donald Trump’s former hotel in Washington, DC received an estimated $ 3.75 million from foreign governments during its four years in office, according to a calculation released by House Democrats on Friday. The Oversight and Reform Committee explained how it reached the estimate, but did not name the countries that paid for the president’s business.

At least we name the countries whose foreign officials we know have spent time there. A full account of the hotel’s patronage by foreign governments will likely never be known. But social media posts, responses to Freedom of Information Act requests, and investigative reports identified officials from at least 33 foreign governments who visited Trump’s hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Its Minister of Mines and Ambassador to the United States attended a dinner at the hotel in 2018, according to an internal State Department email.

Albania

Azerbaijan

The country’s embassy to the United States co-hosted its 2016 Hanukkah party at the hotel, following Trump’s election but before his inauguration, Politico reported.

Bahrain

The country’s embassy to the United States held its 2016 National Day celebration at the hotel, after Trump was elected but before his inauguration, Politico reported.

Bosnia herzegovina

Prime Minister of Republika Srpska, a Serbian enclave in Bosnia, Zeljka Cvijanovic, attended a book signing in 2018 for Fox News’s Jeanne Pirro’s in the hotel lobby. Cvijanovic’s government issued a press release touting its access to the Trump administration, first reported by Mother Jones.

Brazil

Eduardo Bolsonaro, congressman and son of the Brazilian president, donned a “Make Brasil Great Again” hat in the lobby, as journalist Daniel Rittner noted.

Bulgaria

Military ministry spokesperson and press center attaché Alexander Urumov dined at the hotel’s steakhouse in 2018.

Canada

In 2020, MPs Kerry Diotte and Michael Cooper posed in the hotel lobby with Kimberly Guilfoyle, former Fox News personality and current girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr.

Cyprus

Photis Photiou, the Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Overseas Cypriots, addressed a management conference in 2018.

Ecuador

Commerce Minister Pablo Campana Sáenz paid $ 1,200 a night during a stay in 2018, according to David Fahrenthold of the Washington post.

Egypt

MP Dalia Youssef posed in the hotel lobby in 2018.

Georgia

United Nations Ambassador Kaha Imnadze visited in 2017, as Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics first noticed in Washington.

Greece

The mayor and deputy mayor of Mykonos, Konstantinos Koukas and Miltiadis Atzamoglou, celebrated their country’s independence in 2018 with Andrea Catsimatidis, daughter of real estate billionaire John Catsimatidis.

Eight Indian diplomats stayed at the Trump International Hotel Washington, DC in 2017, according to government documents obtained by Aroon Deep.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo conducted an interview with Voice of America from one of the hotel’s signature suites in 2019.

Pakistan

Ali Haider Zaid, Federal Minister of Maritime Affairs, spoke with the hotel’s general manager, Mickael Damelincourt, in 2019. Zaid was in Washington to meet with Trump at the White House.

Philippines

Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel “Babe” del Gallego Romualdez and Minister of Economic Affairs Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga posed with former Representative Jerry Weller (R-Ill.) During the celebration of the National Day 2018 from the embassy.

Qatar

Two senior officials attended a hotel breakfast during Trump’s inaugural celebration, according to the Daily Beast.

Romania

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila stayed at the hotel in 2019, ProPublica and WNYC reported.

Saudi Arabia

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has paid Trump International Hotel nearly $ 270,000 through its Washington, DC lobbying firm in recent months, according to new foreign lobbying disclosure documents,” reported the Daily Caller in 2017.

Serbia

Vladimir Marinkovic, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, agreed with former British politician Nigel Farage.

South Korea

National Assembly Member Wonjin Cho live streamed his dinner from a hotel conference room.

Sweden

A foreign policy adviser to the Swedish national legislature, Andreas E. Palmlöv, has met a close friend at Trump’s estate.
