Defending champions France claimed their first World Cup qualifying victory, beating Kazakhstan 2-0 to lead Group D, Ukraine and Finland two points behind after a draw 1-1 Sunday.
French coach Didier Deschamps made a series of changes from the midweek home draw with Ukraine and one of the recalled players, Ousmane Dembele, scored the first goal from the edge of the box to the 19th minute.
Kazakhstan inadvertently offered the French a second goal in the 44th when Sergey Malyy directed an Antoine Griezmann corner into his own net as the defender jostled with Paul Pogba in the zone.
The corner only came after an incredible clearance from Malyy’s goal line to deny Anthony Martial a simple header into the net at close range.
These were the only two France efforts on target in the first half, but the team created more openings after the break, with Kazakh goalkeeper Alexandr Mokin brilliantly saving from Dembele and Mbappe, who came in after Martial injured his left knee.
Mbappe won a penalty in the 75th after being tripped by Nuraly Alip, but his kick was ruled out by Mokin.
Manchester United striker Martial appeared to shake his knee as he caught his studs in the synthetic turf at Astana Arena in Nur-Sultan, the type of problem Deschamps was worried about ahead of the game.
Martial got up and continued for a few moments, but was removed by Deschamps as a precaution.
There do not appear to have been any further injuries, leaving Deschamps with plenty of options for Wednesday’s qualifying game in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has not played this weekend and is expected to be a tougher test for the French. .
